What the Firm Runs
string
Comma-separated; matches ANY. The vocabulary spans hedge-fund strategies (
long_short, global_macro, event_driven, merger_arbitrage, convertible_arbitrage, market_neutral, distressed, activist, multi_strategy), private markets (private_equity, venture_capital, private_credit, co_investment, secondaries, litigation_finance), allocation (asset_allocation, strategic_asset_allocation, tactical_asset_allocation, manager_selection, liability_driven, target_date_glide_path), and long-only styles (long_only, quantitative, index_passive, smart_beta, credit, real_assets, options_overlay, thematic). This is not the style axis: a quant arb shop reads quantitative on analysis basis while its strategies name the arbitrages.How the Firm Invests — Declared in the Brochure
string
fundamental / quantitative / technical / mixed / unclear. The populated axis for the quant-versus-fundamental cut.string
value / growth / garp / blend_core / quality / income_dividend / index_passive / other.string
The brochure’s own value/growth bucket:
deep_growth / growth_biased / blend / value_biased / deep_value / unclear / not_applicable.string
large_cap / mid_cap / small_cap / micro_cap / all_cap — where the brochure names one; most name none.string
short / medium / long / mixed / unclear.boolean
true matches only firms whose brochure says so — it never matches silence. The same rule holds for uses_leverage, uses_derivatives, uses_options, uses_esg.Two Axes Are Almost Always Silent
implementation_style (systematic_rules_based / discretionary / hybrid) is unclear on the overwhelming majority of brochures, and management_approach (active / passive) on most. Filtering implementation_style=discretionary returns the few brochures that used the word — not the discretionary managers; in ADV, “discretionary” usually means delegated trading authority, a Part 1 fact, not a style. Treat these two as evidence when present and as nothing when absent; use analysis_basis for the quant/fundamental cut.
What the Book Shows — the Revealed Style
string
The 13F-revealed tier, computed from the firm’s own holdings — Title Case, spelled exactly:
Deep Growth, Growth-Biased, Blend / Core, Value-Biased, Deep Value. 13F filers only; null means the firm files no 13F, not that its style is unknown.declared_vg_bucket=value_biased with style_tier=Growth-Biased,Deep Growth finds managers whose portfolio contradicts their own marketing. The facets totals.with_both says how many firms that cross can reach at all — report it alongside the hits. has_style=true restricts to firms with a style row.
Silence Is Not No
The brochure tags are conservative — set only where the brochure states the thing in so many words.unclear, a null flag and an empty tag list all mean the brochure does not say, never that the firm does not do it. The facets response counts the silence per axis (brochure_silent_on_*).
