What You Can Use the Form ADV Directory For
Resolve a manager’s name to a stable CRD and, for 13F filers, to a CIK you can pass to 13F Institutional Holdings. Build a list of firms by location, registration type or size. Find a firm’s phone number, website and contact e-mail. Enumerate the entire adviser roster as a table by paging with no filter.Form ADV Directory Coverage
Coverage is the SEC roster: firms that file Form ADV with the SEC, comprising hedge funds, mutual-fund managers, wealth managers, private-equity and venture firms, and exempt reporting advisers. Exempt reporting advisers file an abbreviated Form ADV. They report far fewer numbers, and they generally file no Part 2A brochure, so several fields are structurally null for them rather than missing.Key Form ADV Directory Fields
crd is the firm’s CRD number and is the primary identifier. cik is the SEC CIK, present only for firms that also file with EDGAR — in practice, 13F filers.
firm_type is a derived business label spelled exactly as one of Hedge-Fund, Mutual-Fund, Mutual-Fund (perf-fee), Wealth-Manager, PE / VC, Hybrid (MF + Hedge), Pension / Institutional, Sub-Advisor or Other / Mixed. It is derived from ADV Part 1 numbers and exists only for 13F filers.
sec_registration_type is Registered or ERA. City, state and country describe the main office. Every row carries a phone number; website and email_primary are present where found.
Self-reported total regulatory assets under management, and the private-fund flags has_hedge_funds, has_pe_funds and has_vc_funds, describe the firm’s declared business.
style_tier is the value/growth tier revealed by the firm’s own 13F book. It is filterable on the directory, but the full style read-out lives on the adviser profile.
Null style fields mean the firm does not file Form 13F — which is true of most wealth managers and of every exempt reporting adviser. It does not mean the firm’s style is unknown.
Form ADV Directory Date Convention
The roster is a monthly snapshot. Rows describe the firm as of the most recent ADV filing captured in that snapshot, and the snapshot date is reported in the profile’s provenance block. A firm that changed address, ownership or size since the snapshot still reads as it did then.Form ADV Directory Sources
All figures on the directory row are self-reported by the firm to the SEC on Form ADV Part 1. They are not audited and are not FocusAlpha estimates.firm_type and style_tier are the two derived fields, and both are computed only for 13F filers.
