Screening advisers by firm type selects firms by what they are, read from each firm’s own Form ADV Part 2A brochure: a primary type, an optional subtype beneath it, the services the firm sells, and the facts that hold alongside its type. A separate label, firm_type, is derived from ADV Part 1 numbers for 13F filers — two independent classifications that are deliberately never merged.

The Primary Type Filter

string
Comma-separated; matches ANY. The ten values: asset_manager, wealth_manager, allocator, program_sponsor, dual_bd_ria, retirement_specialist, trust_company, insurance_affiliated, research_services, restricted_mandate.

The Subtype Filter

string
Comma-separated; matches ANY. A subtype is always a child of a primary type, so filtering on one already implies the parent — and three primary types have no children at all, which is why subtype can never stand in for primary_type. Under asset_manager: hedge_fund, public_markets, private_equity_venture, private_credit, real_estate, quant_systematic, clo_manager, fund_of_funds, registered_fund_adviser, digital_assets, natural_resources_infra, specialty_assets. Under wealth_manager: comprehensive_wealth, family_office, planning_only, digital_advice. Under allocator: ocio, institutional_consultant, manager_of_managers. Under program_sponsor: wrap_sponsor, tamp. The free facets endpoint lists every subtype actually carried.

Services and Role Flags

string
What the firm sells clients; comma-separated, matches ANY: portfolio_management, financial_planning, investment_consulting, pension_consulting, wrap_fee, subadvisory, private_fund, family_office, estate_tax_planning, consulting, research, and more — facets lists all.
string
Facts that hold alongside primary_type — a wealth manager that is also a broker-dealer is still a wealth manager, and without the flag that true fact would have to steal the primary type. Values: dually_registered_bd, sponsors_wrap_program, trust_powers, insurance_licensed, acts_as_subadviser, erisa_fiduciary, manages_private_funds, affiliate_only_clients.
string
entity (the brochure describes the firm) or business_line (it describes one named programme inside it). One brochure answers per firm, and the firm-level one wins automatically — some large platforms file dozens of programme brochures; this filter excludes firms where only a programme brochure exists.

firm_type Is a Different Classification

firm_type (Hedge-Fund, Wealth-Manager, PE / VC, Mutual-Fund, Pension / Institutional, …) is derived from ADV Part 1 numbers for 13F filers only — not read from any brochure. When it and primary_type disagree, that is two classifications disagreeing: report both with their sources rather than picking one.

Roster Filters on the Same Axis
