Japan Report Sections provides the narrative sections of a Japanese-listed company’s annual securities report (有価証券報告書) and half-year report, as filed to EDINET. This is where management explains the year, and for most Japanese companies it exists in no other machine-readable form. Each row is one section of one report, with its length and, unless you ask for the index only, its full text.

What you can use Japan report sections for

Read the MD&A, including the operating-profit bridge management describes in prose. Compare this year’s risk factors with last year’s. Pull the strategy section to see which problems management says it must solve. Read the cross-shareholding disclosure, a live governance issue in Japan.

Sections worth knowing

Pass any of these as a substring to section: The section field on each row is the full element name, for example BusinessRisksTextBlock, and label_ja is the Japanese heading.

The text is Japanese and has no line breaks

The text is Japanese and not translated. It is clean plain text with no markup, but it has no line breaks: the filing’s tables are flattened into one run of characters, so figures inside a section run together with no separator. Read it as prose, and take every number from Japan Financials or Japan Segments, which read the tagged values.
Use index_only=true to list the sections a filing has, with n_chars for each, before pulling a large body.

Japan report sections coverage

Sections come from annual and half-year reports only, so a period with no loaded report has none. Rows are ordered newest report first, longest section first. These results are not paged — next_cursor is always null — so select a report with period_end and a section with section. Every response carries a measured coverage block.
